... something that defies the words that are placed upon us,
used to frame us, to decode our enigma ... an act of reclaiming, of holding space for ourselves, not about you, for you, with you, or your discomfort in this disquiet. "Maness" is a collection of intimate works in exquisite detail, drawing viewers into the mysterious language of plants and explorations of identity. Reclaiming feminine histories, titles, and words, the collection interrogates the pathways and origins of the language used to frame 'woman/the feminine'. {English} Language is often understood oppositionally, or in a binary sense of 'not this, that', with 'woman' being framed as 'not man'. Plants capture a mystical complexity, hidden knowledge, and were used in the Victorian Language of Flowers to codify subtle messages. |
